Unattended Child Policy
The Yorba Linda Public Library is concerned for the welfare and safety of its users. Children five years of age and under must be accompanied by an older responsible person at all times. If a child aged fourteen or younger is left on the premises unattended or attended by a minor (person under 15 years of age) for an extended period of time, staff will attempt to contact a parent or guardian. When contact is made, the parent or guardian will be informed that staff is not responsible for the child’s welfare and safety, and that it is not permissible to leave a child unattended at the library.
California Penal Code
Section 271
271. Every parent of any child under the age of 14 years, and every person to whom any such child has been confided for nurture, or education, who deserts such child in any place whatever with intent to abandon it, is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison or in the county jail not exceeding one year or by fine not exceeding one thousand dollars ($1,000) or by both.
